Stop the Ongoing Problem of False Alarms with Home Security Systems

“I didn’t want anything…I just wanted to see how fast you could get here in case of an emergency!”

We all laugh at this cartoon clip especially if you have kids, but when it comes to false alarm calls to law enforcement, this is no joke.  According to the SAPD alarm permit website (http://www.sanantonio.gov/SAPD/AlarmPermits.aspx) over 90% of all burglary calls in the San Antonio area are false alarms, and nationwide, these numbers still hold true. So while the cartoon was meant to be humorous, this is effectively how we treat our local law enforcement— we have them come out when there really is no emergency. To make matters worse, police departments are already on tight budgets with limited resources and cannot afford to dispatch officers to non-emergency situations. So how can we as home security system owners help to stop this rampant problem?

Causes of False Alarms

Most false alarms occur as a result of improper usage of the system, so it is important that you understand both how your home security system works and how to properly use it. If you do not fully understand how your system works, insist that the installer of your system come back out to your home and explain it to you until you are comfortable with it.
Also make sure that anyone who will use the system has been trained as well. This applies to relatives, baby sitters, house sitters, or anybody else that you are going to entrust to arm and disarm your home security system. Don’t just explain it to them, watch them go through the process. Many things get lost in translation when we simply give people verbal instructions.

Motion sensors are another major source of false alarms in home security systems. From overzealous pets to leftover party balloons, many items can trip a motion detector while you are away from your home— but there’s a better way.

The Key Witness Security Solution

Key Witness Security install devices known as MotionViewers that are a combination of a motion detector and a camera in one device. With this device, a monitoring station can determine exactly what caused the motion alarm to trip. Now a call to 911 can be avoided or carried out based on what is witnessed in the video clip.

Following these simple steps can virtually eliminate false alarms coming from your home security system. You can request more information regarding MotionViewers at info@keywitness.co.
